A national sandwich chain is making a local comeback.
Which Wich is planning to open at Chesterfield Towne Center in January, company spokesperson Hala Habal said Monday.
It will mark a return to the Richmond market for Which Wich, after the last of the chain’s previous wave of area locations closed in 2025.
Its new shop will operate out of the mall space formerly home to competitor Jimmy Johns, according to a building permit recently filed with the county. The spot has its own entrance and is next to Canastas.
Which Wich is known for its customizable sandwiches that are ordered by marking up sandwich bags with Sharpie pens.
It had once operated multiple locations in the Richmond region but closed a couple during the pandemic years and then by spring 2025 shuttered its last two local stores at Westchester Commons and Willow Lawn.
Though it retreated from the Richmond region due to pandemic-related economic pressures, the company said that it intends to tap back into what had been a strong market with a high-traffic location.
“The Richmond area has always been a fantastic market for Which Wich. While our previous local storefronts unfortunately closed due to the challenging business climate brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, our belief in the region’s strong customer base never wavered,” the company said in a prepared statement.
The Chesterfield sandwich shop will be operated by married couple franchisees Don and Carolyn Carden, and it will be their first Which Wich. Don has management experience with MKG Enterprises, which operates McDonald’s restaurants in Virginia, and would be the primary operator of the new Which Wich, according to Habal.
Which Wich comes to Chesterfield Towne Center as the mall’s owners plot major renovations. Fast-casual bowl concept Flavor Hive is also planning to open at the mall.
