Sonoma County mother and son arrested in double DUI

(KRON) -- A mother and her son were arrested in Sonoma County Wednesday night on suspicion of committing the same crime: driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Cotati Police Department said its officers encountered a double DUI case after a witness flagged down one of its officers who was on patrol downtown. Police said the witness pointed out a driver who appeared to be drunk.

The officer followed the vehicle, observed multiple vehicle code violations, and pulled it over. CPD wrote, "the officer conducted an investigation that ultimately resulted in the driver being placed under arrest for driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs."

During his arrest, the driver asked for police to contact his mother so she could retrieve his car and dog.

"At the request of the suspect, the suspect’s mother was contacted to respond out to the scene and retrieve his dog and his vehicle -- and was specifically asked over the phone if she herself had been drinking. The suspect’s mother said she had not," CPD wrote.

Once she arrived, police officers realized that she was in fact intoxicated, according to CPD. They tested her blood alcohol content and it allegedly produced a 0.18% BAC.

The mother and son were booked into a Sonoma County jail, and their names were not released by law enforcement authorities. Officers were eventually able to find a sober person to pick up the dog.

Police officials wrote, "This is another great example of how utilizing ride share services, planning ahead, or just not making the decision to get behind the wheel after drinking would have prevented all of this."
